Another term for the violin is fiddle. However, fiddle can be referred to any bowed string instrument. Generally, fiddle music has been the term used for folk music whereas the violin is typically referred in the context of classical music even though many classical musicians can play the folk style and vice versa. The history of violin with four strings goes back to 1555. Andrea Amati can be called as the father of modern-day violin. He made the first violin with four strings in 1555. The oldest surviving violin by the label inside, made by Andrea Amati  known as the "Charles IX,"   was made in Cremona in 1560. During the 17th and early 18th centuries, the art of violin making reached unprecedented heights in the hands of the Italian luthiers named Antonio Stradivari, Giuseppe Guarneri as well as the Austrian Jacob Stainer. Stradivari was a student of Nicolo Amati, who was the grandson of Andrea Amati. The Stradivarius violin made in 1716 remains now in  Ashmolean Museum of Oxford in pristine condition. Stradivarius violins and Guarneri violins are the most sought-after instruments by both collectors and performers.

Initially, the violin music was used along with dancing, and violin was not considered a musical instrument of high status/class. In 1600 through its use in operas by famous composers like Claudio Monteverdi  violin attained a more respected position. The violins' prestige further grew during the Baroque period, by such celebrated figures in music as Antonio Vivaldi, Giuseppe Tartini and Johann Sebastian Bach.

The Violin got a prominent role in the instrumental music circle by the mid-18th century. In the 19th century, the violin music rose to further glory in the hands of virtuoso violinists such as Nicolo Paganini, Pablo de Sarasate, Henri Vieuxtemps, Joseph Joachim and Eugene Ysaye. In the 20th century, the violin achieved new  technical and artistic heights. Noted violinists of this time are Jascha Heifetz, David Oistrakh, Yehudi Menuhin, Isaac Stern and Fritz Kreisler.
